Sing a soothing Song.

  Rock your child gently.

  Let your child punch a pillow.

  Give your child an object with
   a soothing texture, such as a
     stuffed animal or a fleecy blanket.

  Go outside and listen to the birdssing.

  Stare into your child's eyes and
     take deep breaths.  Your child will
     eventually do the same.

Ways To Defuse An Emotional Meltdown In 1 and 2 year olds
    Avoid frustrating situations.  Don't give your child toys that are too advanced.  Don't expect your child to sit quietly for long periods of time.  Don't spend long periods of time while learning new skills.

     Be consistent.  Toddlers thrive on order and routine, and they do best when they know what to expect. 

     Keep snacks on hand.  Your child is more like to be cranky if they are hungry. 

     Encourage naps.  A tired child is more apt to have a meltdown than a well rested child.

     Distract your child.  When you feel the tension rising, read a book, put on music or go outside.
