| Babies and toddlers like to feed themselves with their hands, but using a spoon is often a different story. The best way to get your child to use a spoon is to stop feeding him yourself. Otherwise, he has no incentive to do so--he'll enjoy both your anxious concern about his food intake and the undivided attention he gets from you as you feed him. Try this strategy. 1. When you sit your child down to eat, casually put two spoons in front of him. Having a choice will give him a feeling of control; you might give him a red spoon and a blue spoon, or two spoons with different cartoon characters on them. 2. Stay in the room, washing dishes or doing other tasks and talking to him occasionally--but don't mention the meal or how much he's eating. 3. If he doesn't use the spoon, don't say anything. Don't make a fuss or feed him. Just cheerfully take him away from the table and go on with the rest of your day. 4. Repeat this process at every meal, and within a week or so, he'll be feeding himself with a spoon. |
